Everything you need to know about our silk pyjama set

We believe life is all about having a good time, going out, having fun, and as long as you're happy, you've accomplished everything. Going out is something that brings out the joy and makes you feel fulfilled, but we do agree that dressing up and making that extra effort can sometimes feel exhausting. L’escale believes in spontaneity and last-minute plans because, let’s be real, they usually end up being the most special and unforgettable nights.

Our intention was to create the perfect outfit to feel flawless at home. Not just that, but if you have eleventh-hour plans, you simply have to swap your slippers for your favourite pair of heels and be ready for a night out in a matter of minutes.

You might be second-guessing wearing PJs outside, but don't, because these aren't your casual ones. We often stumble into the same situations, so we've designed it after putting so much thought into it. When dressed up, the pyjamas do not look like a normal pyjama but rather very classy and chic with beautiful vibrant colours. The fit is very comfortable but a little loose depending on your body shape. People will stare because the silk is so elegant and has that stunning silky rich look, as the goal was to make ladies (or men) look flawless so they're very luxurious and beautiful to look at.

If we believe in sustainability and slow living, why are these pyjamas made in China?

Nowadays, seeing the label "Made in China" is often regarded inversely. However, it only made sense for us to manufacture our entire silk pyjama collection there. Why? Because silk is a very luxurious fabric that is difficult for most people to manipulate. After reaching out to many small businesses in Canada, we discovered that the majority of them were often saying no to silk because of the high cost of production. In fact, if you make a mistake while sewing silk, your fabric will most likely be ruined.

As a matter of fact, unexpected production costs can quickly add up. That's when we decided to visit China, because silk is a part of their heritage.

After flying there and looking at several options for where to produce the collection, we finally found a small atelier aligned with our mindset, vision, and quality of work. The way they manipulate the silk is quite unbelievable, and it was only instinctual for us to produce the nightwear collection there. But of course, these people working on this collection, finishing the work by hand to ensure quality, come with a price. Which is why our price point for these items is on the expensive side. However, we believe that amazing handmade work deserves to be respected and compensated fairly.

Why is 19 momme silk used?

Have you ever wondered why some silk fabrics are see-through and feel of lower quality than others? It all comes down to the thread count and weight. Momme (mm) is a unit of measurement used to determine the density of silk fabrics and to provide a clear understanding of the quality of a silk fabric. 16 or 19 momme is required for luxurious clothing with perfect fluidity.

Unfortunately, many higher-priced items on the market often opt for a lower density. L'escale wanted to create something unique but also chic and high-end. So we selected a heavier silk so that nothing would show through but also to have a fabric that would move with your body in the most elegant way.

Sewing a perfectly made silk pyjama

To ensure that our pyjamas were perfectly made, we decided to use the French seam technique, which involves sewing everything twice for a more discreet and dainty look. It is a method of achieving "clean" finishes with no visible raw edge. Because we don't mind visible edges (they're sometimes part of the design, like our beach towels), the pyjamas needed a cleaner, more high-end finish. Of course, doing so doubles the work because each side of the garment must be stitched twice. This, however, will allow your garment to last longer and become a staple piece in your wardrobe for many years to come.

Why is the L'escale silk pyjamas label tag called Milord Chérie?

Milord Chérie was supposed to become a silk pyjama brand before L'escale was even born. The collection was designed and created prior to Covid, but life had other plans. We decided to hold on to the Milord project until things improved. However, after weeks of sitting at home, L'escale saw the light, and it only felt like the right path for us to continue on. We wanted to honour the brand by releasing this one collection under the Milord Chérie label, so we kept the Milord Chérie tag. Of course, our future collections will finally include the L'escale tags, but for the time being, it is Milord's turn to shine.

Why don’t we have other sizes?

Because this collection was made with very limited items of pyjamas, a one-size garment allows us to cover more people with just one design. However, we understand that this can be irksome. But as we are a small company that recently launched, we try to grow one step at a time, and L’escale will of course launch more sizes in the future. We believe in diversity, and dressing all body types is something we hope to do in the very near future.

How to Look After Your Silk Pyjamas

Silk has a reputation for being difficult to maintain, which we agree with because it is a very noble fabric that requires more care and attention. However, companies are now producing gentle and silk-friendly soap so that you can wash your beautiful garments at home. While we sometimes prefer to hire a professional cleaner, you can also do it yourself in the comfort of your own home. The Laundress, a luxury detergent and fabric care company based in New York, makes our favourite products for silk pyjamas. We use the following products:

  • The Delicate Wash (Care for Silk, Synthetics & Blends)

  • The Wash & Stain Bar (Spot Treat or Hand Wash Anywhere)

  • The Delicate Spray (Freshen Silk, Synthetics & Blends)

  •  The Mesh Bag Bundle (Protect delicate garments from tangles and snags in the machine)

Our mission

Well, dressing you in the most comfortable and luxurious way is definitely part of the mission. but also to educate and give people the right information about our items on L’escale Boutique. We also want people to understand that seeing a tag that reads "Made in China" is not always negative, and we speak for many other companies out there that produce their clothing lines the right way. Sustainability is a choice, and we understand that it’s not always easy to be fully sustainable. However, we can make a difference by taking little steps at a time and getting better at it over time.
